So, I haven't written in a while and so far I haven't written much about school. Probably should, it is a very central part of my daily life. Takes up more time than anything else, save for parenting. With that said here's some food for thought:
Writing is Thinking, anything else is just Daydreaming
That was the profound statement my professor made the other day in class. I believe I have heard the first part before, "writing is thinking", but it never really hit me until he stated that. So I began thinking, er, daydreaming about it. Of course once I begin to actively apply my critical thinking skills, my brain won't shut off! I end up laying in bed contemplating the wonders and mysteries of life and the universe until some ungodly hour. So what did I decide to do?
I bought a journal. First one I have bought in years. I have never been very good at journaling but I have decided to try approaching it from a different angle. I will write my thoughts down as I have them and see what I can work out. Sounds easy right? Well, that is yet to be documented.
Anyway, also corresponding to this has been my realization that all this education that I have been subjecting myself to is paying off. How? In my thought processes. I've noticed that I've been able think deeper into a subject or past where typically I'd get hung up and have to stop thinking about it. Personally I think this is great, exercising my brain and it feels great! We should all spend some quiet time just thinking about things. Anything. Everything. Nothing.
Oh yea, and this is brought by my History of Environmentalism class I am taking this summer. My professor assigned us a Phenological Journal to keep during the class. This is how we are being graded. And what is a phenological journal you ask? Well, phenology deals with climate change and bird migrations, so essentially its a keeping a journal about environmental change. Which is what we are doing... going to a "natural" place and observing it, for 5 weeks... not very long really, and considering its August there isn't a whole lot of change going on. But I plug away at it, as well as forcing the kids to participate since I can't very well leave them home alone while I go tromping through the wilderness. So far they are either really bored and irritated by having to go out there with me or super interested, especially when they find coyote poop. Kids and poop...
The other things on my mind have centered around my other class, History of Sexuality in the U.S. Interesting class. Good reading. Fascinating subject. Gets me thinking both historically and sociologically. I tell ya, I really LOVE my majors! Taking on the second one has been tough since my spare time has taken a hit, but its totally worth it.
Not going too get to deep tonight, my brain just can't handle it at the moment. Homework is finished for the night so now its time to let my mind veg out a little bit.
Until next time, take the time to Write and Think... you may surprise yourself. :)
